A GERMAN plane set for Canada had to be diverted after a man desperate for a cigarette tried to open the cabin door at 38,000 feet.

The Lufthansa flight from Munich to Vancouver was forced to make an emergency landing in Hamburg because of the incident.

When he realised that he could not smoke on the plane, he started to scream and shout.

The irate passenger then tried to open a cabin door while the plane was in the air.
