Reps want FG to search for Chibok girls, others

The House of Representatives on Tuesday revisited the plight of the over 200 abducted schoolgirls in Chibok, Borno State, in 2014, calling on the Federal Government to set up a situation/control room to search for the missing girls.

In a resolution passed on Tuesday, the House said the control room should be manned by a crack team of specialists drawn from the Department of State Services, the Police and the Armed Forces.

The resolution added that all Nigerians abducted by Boko Haram insurgents should also be rescued by the team to be so established.

The resolution followed a motion by the lawmaker representing Chibok in the House, Asabe Bashir.

Bashir’s motion partly read, “The House notes that the girls, as Nigerian citizens, deserve to have their right to life, freedom and dignity protected by the government of Nigeria.

“Concerned that there is no clear indication of any further efforts aimed at rescuing the abducted girls.”

The House urged that as part of efforts to find the girls and other abducted Nigerians, the government should offer “financial inducement” for any information that would be helpful in rescuing the victims.

It also noted that the report of the Presidential Fact-Finding Committee on the Chibok girls should be made public.

Similarly, the House asked for financial support for the families of the girls to “cushion the hardship and trauma the insurgents have brought upon them.”

Members also urged the government to “sponsor the education of at least one child” from the families of the abducted girls.
