Use Facebook Lite on Android Devices to Save Data Usage and Battery Life

If you are a Facebook user chances are you have also installed the Facebook app on your mobile phone. For many Android users they will find that the Facebook app is heavy and resource-intensive. It sucks up a lot of the battery life and data bandwidth. And if you are using Facebook Messenger, you will need to install an additional app for the messaging function. For those who are using a low-specced Android phone, or just want to save your data bandwidth while using Facebook, you can now try out Facebook Lite.If you are a Facebook user chances are you have also installed the Facebook app on your mobile phone. For many Android users they will find that the Facebook app is heavy and resource-intensive. It sucks up a lot of the battery life and data bandwidth. And if you are using Facebook Messenger, you will need to install an additional app for the messaging function. For those who are using a low-specced Android phone, or just want to save your data bandwidth while using Facebook, you can now try out Facebook Lite.
Facebook Lite is a newly released app by Facebook that uses less data and works in all network conditions. It is lightweight (the app is less than 1MB) and designed for 2G networks and areas with limited network connectivity.
Similar to the Tinfoil app that we reviewed earlier, Facebook Lite is simply a wrapper of its mobile web site. However, one thing that makes it different is that it comes with native notification so you don’t miss an alert or update.
Installing Facebook Lite is tricky. While it is listed in Google Play Store, it can only be installed in a small variety of phones. I have at least five Android devices on my list, and I can’t install Facebook Lite on any of them.
You can try your luck in the Play Store (try searching for it in the Play Store on your mobile device, and if the app doesn’t show up in the list that means your device is not in the “Installable” list). If this doesn’t work for you the next alternative is to download the apk file from AndroidPolice’s apkmirror website.
Note: you will have to enable “Install apps from unknown source” in order to install Facebook Lite apk.
facebook-lite-apkmirror-apk-download
After the download you can tap on the apk file to install it. Do note that it will offer a big list of permissions.
On the first run, it will prompt you to select the Language.
Next will be the login screen.
Lastly, it will get you to find your friends from your contact list which you can skip.
The interface is a stripped-down version of the official Facebook app and with a predominantly white background. The default font size is ‘Medium” which can appear small on a phone with a big screen. Luckily you can change the font size to Large in the Settings.
The loading speed is fast, and it doesn’t take up much memory
compared to the Facebook app:
With a stripped-down version, it is obvious that some of the main app features have to go. One thing that is missing is the in-app browser. When you click on a link in your news feed, it will load in the device’s default browser instead, which can be slow in some cases.
On the other hand, messaging workd natively in Facebook Lite, so you don’t have to install a separate Messenger app.
While updating your status you can easily upload photos, add your location, etc., so there aren’t as many differences as the main app.
While Facebook Lite is meant for a low-specced Android phone, and/or phone with only 2G connection, it works well on all of my Android devices, some of which are quite well-specced. If you hate that the main Facebook app is taking up too much of your data bandwidth and memory resources, as well as draining your battery, do give the Facebook Lite app a try. I am sure you will like it.

7 Good Reasons Why Users Should Upgrade to Windows 10

Windows 8 is a disaster because of its all new Start Screen, forced touchscreen interface and the cumbersome and low-quality apps. Rectifying almost all the downsides of Windows 8 and including the good things of Windows 7, Microsoft unveiled Windows 10.
Unlike other previous versions, Microsoft actually took feedback from users to improve the features and visual aesthetics. Here are some compelling reasons why you should consider upgrading to Windows 10.
For almost any Windows user the Start menu is one of the most used features. In Windows 8 Microsoft changed it completely. In Windows 10 the much-loved Start menu made a grand comeback encompassing the best of Windows 7 and 8. Even the Power button is right back in its rightful place – no more fiddling with hidden menus like in Windows 8.
The Start menu in Windows 10 has got two halves. The left side of the Start menu has the regular file explorer, most used apps and recently installed apps. On the right side you have the modern apps with live tiles. One of the best things about the Windows 10 Start menu is that it is highly customizable and yet easy to use.

In addition Microsoft updated the user interface with new icons, sounds, touch and mouse friendly icons, etc. All the modern apps are now windowed just like the regular apps. Moreover, Windows 10 has a shiny and actually useful notification center to deal with all the notifications and stuff.
Microsoft officially introduced Cortana to Windows 10, a personal digital assistant for your PC. By default, Cortana will sit right next to the Start button, and you can invoke her just by saying “Hey, Cortana.” Of course, Cortana is a completely optional feature, and you need to specifically enable it to start using it.
With Cortana enabled, you can actually speak and get your computer to do things like turning your WiFi or Bluetooth on and off, searching for files and folders, interacting with the music player, taking quick notes, launching an application, etc.
Moreover, Cortana can show you location-based notifications and even keep track of your calendar and schedules. For instance, if you let Cortana know when you return home from work, it can show you traffic updates and other data automatically at a quick glance so that you can reschedule if necessary.
Finally, if you have the technical build installed, try asking Cortana “What’s the answer for Life, Universe and Everything?
Microsoft Edge is the new default web browser in Windows 10, and it is built to compete with the major browsers like Chrome and Firefox. Unlike Internet Explorer, Edge is built from the ground up, and it is fast and user-friendly. Not only does it emphasize speed and minimal user-interface, it also has a variety of tools, including but not limited to the reading list, Cortana integration, reading mode, tools to annotate and share web pages, and more.

With its default “Bing” search engine, it can show you results instantly while you are still typing in the address bar. It’s helpful to know stuff like the weather forecast, traffic updates, etc. Of course, this doesn’t mean Internet Explorer no longer exists; it is just tucked deep under.
If you are a gamer, then DirectX 12 is one of the best things you will hear about Windows 10. In case you don’t know, DirectX 12 is a low-level graphics API which provides a better threading model than the previous DirectX 11 to improve graphic card and gaming performance while keeping the power consumption as low as possible.
One more good thing about DirectX 12 is that it gives game developers console-like deep control for refined tweaking. Moreover, you don’t actually need a graphics card to enjoy the full potential of DirectX 12 as it can be easily activated by the drivers.
If you are a gamer, upgrading to Windows 10 will surely improve your gaming experience.
With Windows 10 you can now stream your Xbox One games to your PC. If you are an Xbox One owner, you no longer have to sit before it to play your favorite game. Windows 10 comes pre-installed with the Xbox app, and once enabled, all you have to do is to plug your controller into your PC, and the games will start streaming over your local network.
The good thing about the Xbox app is that it comes with several Xbox features like friends, achievements, support to launch apps, etc. The lag in the stream entirely depends upon the strength of your home network. i.e. if you have a good and speedy home network then there shouldn’t be any noticeable lag in the streaming.
Providing the same computing or user experience no matter what device you are using is what Continuum aims to achieve. Unlike Windows 8, Windows 10 no longer forces you to use the touch-screen. Instead, Continuum ensures that the operating system works flawlessly without any speed bumps regardless of device type or screen size.
Continuum allows Windows to adopt both the desktop and tablet devices on the fly and offers a natural, no-compromise and familiar user interface across the devices. Just look at the video shared above to see how awesome the Continuum feature is.
Over the past few months, there were several speculations that Windows 10 would be a subscription-based service. But that’s not what it is. Unlike all the upgrades we’ve seen over the years, Windows 10 is actually free for all the genuine Windows 7 and 8 users as long as you upgrade your system within one year from the launch date.
That being said, Windows 10 is free for many but not all. The Enterprise upgrades are not free, and the RTs will receive a stripped down version of Windows 10 as a part of the update program.
There is no denying that the new operating system brings several enhancements with speed, security and stability. Moreover, there is a wealth of new and compelling features like Snap Assist, Virtual Desktops, Cross Platform apps, improved security, new music service, continuous development of the operating system, etc.
These are my compelling reasons that make me upgrade to Windows 10. So, what do you think, do you want to upgrade to Windows 10?
Share your thoughts and experiences about the all-new Windows 10 using the comments form below.

Get Email Notification of Security Vulnerabilities in WordPress Plugins

As a webmaster of a WordPress site, the topmost priority is to keep it secure. With thousands of plugins in the WordPress repository, all it takes is just a malformed code in a plugin to bring the whole site down. We have shown you some of the security plugins that you can use to protect yourself, and to bring it further, you can now configure WordPress to send you email notifications when a security vulnerability is found in your WordPress plugins. Also read Top 20 Ways to Secure Your WordPress Blog. .
Plugin Vulnerabilities is a simple WordPress plugin that actively scans your installed plugins and sends you an email alert when a security vulnerability is found.
The usage is very simple. Once installed, go to “Plugins -> Plugins Vulnerabilities” to configure the settings.
On the settings page it shows you a list of vulnerabilities found in your existing installed plugins and also known vulnerabilities for the past versions of existing plugins.

For every vulnerability found it will come with a link to a site where you can read more information about it.
At the bottom of the Settings page, there is a drop-down field where you can enable an email alert when a security vulnerability is detected. Just change the drop-down to “Enabled” and click “Save Changes.”
It will now send you email notifications when it detects security vulnerabilities in your plugins.
To test it out, I downloaded version 1.5.5.1 of WordPress SEo (it has been renamed to Yoast SEO) that is known to have a cross-site scripting vulnerability. And this is what I see on the Plugins page:
Note: Plugin vulnerabilities currently covers 345 vulnerabilities and will be updated as more vulnerabilities are uncovered.
If you received an email alert from Plugin Vulnerabilities, the first thing to do is to quickly update the plugin to the latest version. If it is already the latest version, and there is no fix from the developer, you will need to deactivate the plugin and look for a better, safer alternative.
If you tend to not bother too much with your WordPress setup, and/or you have not enabled the automatic background update for plugins, this will be a useful plugin for you as it keeps you alerted on the security vulnerabilities of your site. Let us know if you find this useful.

How to Prevent a Folder From Being Included in the Gallery App in Android

In an effort to ensure that all the media files on your Android device are available in the Gallery app for you to watch or see them, the system performs a check to see if a new media file has been added each time you reboot your device. While that is totally fine for most of us, some of us have files that we do not want to be included in the Gallery app to be viewed by others.
There is a way for you to prevent the Gallery app from scanning specific folders on your device. It does not require you to use a third-party app to get the job done.
In order to make it easy to hide files from the Gallery app, you will need to add all your files into a single folder.
Once that is done, follow these steps to prevent that folder from being scanned by Android Gallery.
1. Launch File Manager on your Android device.

2. Press the Menu button and select “Settings.” You will need to first enable your device to show hidden files so that you can see your newly created hidden folder.

3. Enable the option that says “Show hidden files.” You should then be able to see the hidden files and folders in file manager.

4. If you have not already created a folder to put all your media files in, create one now. You can do that by pressing the Menu button and selecting the option that says “Create folder.”

5. Ok, so here’s the trick. While entering a name for your folder, just add “.” (period) before the folder name. So, if I was going to create a folder named “HideMe,” I would name it “.HideMe.” Note the dot that I added before the folder name and not the period at the end of the sentence.
Then tap the “OK” button and let it create the folder.

6. Any files that you add to this folder will not be included in the Gallery app on your device. These files are now hidden from the Android Gallery on your device.

If you do not want to create or rename the folder and still want it to be hidden from your gallery, here’s how you can do that.
1. Download and install ES File Explorer on your device. Once installed, launch it from your app drawer.
2. Open the folder that you do not want to be scanned by the Gallery app.
3. Tap the button that says “New” in the bottom panel. You are going to create a new file in the current directory to make all the files in the directory hidden from your gallery.

4. You will be asked which new item you would like to create. Tap on “File” as you are going to create a new file and not a new folder.

5. Enter “.nomedia” as the file name and tap on “OK.”
The Android Gallery app does not scan for media files in the folders that have a file named “.nomedia.” The file just tells the app that there are no media files here in this folder to be included in the gallery.

6. You should be able to see the file along with your media files.

Deleting or renaming the file should make all the media in the folder available to the Gallery app. Let it just sit there to keep your files from the Android Gallery.
Not every media file on your Android device needs to be put in the gallery. The method above helps you keep your chosen files from the Gallery app on your device.
